Dryland Mushing: A Fun and Convenient Way to Exercise High-Energy Dogs

December 2, 2022

Mushing is a sport or transport method powered by our canine companions! It includes carting, pulka, dog scootering, sled dog racing, skijoring, freighting, weight pulling, etc. More recently, dryland mushing, also known as urban mushing, has brought unique and exciting aspects to the sport, it offers an experience that combines the thrill of dog mushing with the convenience of land-based transportation. The sport was created to keep racing sled dogs in shape over the summer. However, dryland mushing has quickly taken over among regular dog owners as a fun and convenient way to exercise high-energy dogs.

Unlike traditional dog mushing, which takes place on snow, and requires specialized equipment, sleds, and a team of dogs, dryland mushing requires little equipment and only one dog to get started. This activity is perfect for areas with mild winters and it can be done by a wide range of dog breeds and sizes! Enjoy a new way to explore nature – minus the icy wind in your face or the rigorous physical demands of traditional dog sledding.

Types of Dryland Mushing

Traditionally, the term “dryland mushing” covers canicross, bikejoring, scootering, carting, sulky and skatejoring. Let’s take a closer look at each activity:

Canicross

Canicross is a dog sport that combines cross-country running with dog mushing. It involves a person and a dog running together, with the dog pulling the person along. The person is typically attached to the dog via a waist belt or harness, with a bungee cord or line connecting the two. This elastic connection helps to absorb the shock when the dog pulls on the leash, allowing the dog and person to run more comfortably together. It is an inexpensive sport to practice with your dog, you will only need running shoes, a harness, a waist belt, and a bungee cord to participate.

Bikejoring

Bikejoring is an exhilarating experience that puts you in the driver’s seat – literally! By attaching your dog to a bicycle via harness and gangline, you can share the excitement of mushing with them as they pull you along. It makes for a unique bonding opportunity between humans and canines alike! Only a bikejoring or mushing antenna needs to be added to your bicycle to avoid any tangles in the gangline, making this a low-equipment way to enjoy dryland mushing.

Scootering

Ready for an adventure? You and your bestie will love scootering! Unlike biking, riding a kick scooter offers added stability – perfect if you’re not feeling brave enough to bike. Plus, it’s the ideal choice for outdoor thrill-seekers; dryland mushers swear by them because they offer great control over tough terrain. The only thing standing in between you and a wild ride is some new gear – but once that’s sorted out there’ll be no stopping halfway up the mountain!

Carting

An exciting and rewarding sport for dog owners of all sizes, shapes, and breeds. While especially popular with big dogs like Swiss Mountain Dogs or Newfoundlands – who love the challenge of pulling a loaded cart along specific distances – it’s also great fun for smaller dogs wanting to join in on the action, but are not strong enough to pull people. Make your dog feel included by helping to move supplies, such as farm goods, camping equipment, groceries, or firewood. Your dog will love you for it!

Skatejoring

For those with a craving for adventure and an appreciation of the outrageous, nothing compares to skatejoring – where you are pulled on your board or blades by your furry best friend! It may seem daunting at first glance, however, with the necessary skills (and daring!) it can be incredibly thrilling. Just make sure that both dog and rider have all required safety gear so everyone has peace of mind while they take off together on this unique journey.

Sulky

Need a new way to get around? Try sulky – it’s like your four-legged friend taking you for the ride of your life! Just in case traditional transport options aren’t really cutting it, why not leave them behind and embark on an adventure with your best friend pulling you swiftly along? It doesn’t matter if they are large or powerful; thanks to its sturdy design, everyone can enjoy this fun alternative that’s sure to bring lots of laughs wherever go.
